Azeez Solanke beats Marwan Abdelwahab to become ITTF African Junior champion
Team Nigeria continue their dominance in African tennis after Azeez Solanke beat Marwan Abdelwahab in six sets to became the ITTF African Junior champion.
Azeez Solanke and his compatriots broke the dominance of Egypt in the boys singles event of the ITTF African Junior and Cadet Championship.
On Saturday, Solanke won the junior boys’ singles title after defeating Egyptian Marwan Abdelwahab (13-11, 4-11, 10-12, 11-5, 13-11, 11-6) and partnered with Jamiu Ayanwale to claim the junior boys doubles gold after overcoming the pair of Gawad El-Herazy and Marwan Abdelwahab (11-8, 11-7, 11-6).
In addition, Azeez Solanke also won the top prize in the junior boys’ team event, while in the boys’ Cadet singles, Nigeria’s Taiwo Mati won gold after eliminating compatriot Jamiu Ayanwale, (11-8, 11-4, 11-9, 11-8).
However, Emmanuel Augustine narrowly missed the under 21 men’s singles gold. He was beaten by Egypt’s Mahmoud Helmy
(11-1, 8-11, 14-12, 11-6, 11-2).
