Benin Republic and Rwanda coaches react to meeting Nigeria again in 2025 AFCON qualifiers
The coaches of Benin Republic and Rwanda have shared their thoughts on being grouped with three-time African champions, the Super Eagles of Nigeria, in the AFCON 2025 qualifying series.
Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, remains optimistic about his team’s chances. The Squirrels recently achieved a notable 2-1 victory over Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Having managed the Super Eagles for six years, Rohr believes his team can pull off another win.
“It’s a difficult draw because there’s Nigeria again. We also have Rwanda, an adversary we know well and are wary of. And there’s Libya, who have a good team. It will be a difficult trip there,” Rohr said via the official Benin Football Federation website.
Rwanda’s head coach, Torsten Frank Spitller, expressed his concerns about being in the same group with Nigeria and Benin, especially since they are also competing against these teams in the World Cup qualifiers.
“It’s a little sad that we have two teams in the group, Nigeria and Benin, with whom we are playing in the same group in the World Cup qualifiers. But it is as it is,” Spitller commented on the official Rwanda Football Federation website.
The AFCON 2025 qualifiers are set to kick off in September.
