Brighton came from behind to beat Chelsea 3-1 after the Blues had a player sent off for the second Saturday in a row.
Danny Welbeck and Maxim de Cuyper both scored in added time to punish Chelsea, who were reduced to 10 men when Trevoh Chalobah was shown a red card in the 53rd minute.
Chelsea had looked comfortable in the first half. Enzo Fernandez gave them the lead when his header from Reece James’s cross deflected off Kaoru Mitoma and into the net.
But Mitoma helped turn the game around. He won the ball from Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, making his first Premier League start, before Chalobah brought down Georginio Rutter with a desperate tackle. After a VAR review, Chalobah was sent off – just a week after goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was dismissed against Manchester United.
Brighton took full advantage. Welbeck came off the bench to head in the equaliser in the 77th minute. De Cuyper then put the visitors ahead from a corner early in stoppage time, before Welbeck struck again from close range to seal the win.
Chelsea, now without a league victory since the international break, drop to seventh place and were booed by some fans at full-time. They face Liverpool next at Stamford Bridge.
Brighton, meanwhile, climb into 10th after another strong result against a top-six side.
