CAF considers postponement of AFCON 2025 to January 2026

In a bid to navigate a jam-packed football calendar for 2025, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is contemplating postponing the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to January 2026.

Originally slated for the summer of 2025, the AFCON scheduling clash arose due to the introduction of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, set to kick off in the USA in June-July next year.

The overlapping tournaments pose a logistical challenge for CAF, prompting officials to reconsider the timing of AFCON 2025. With the majority of global leagues, notably in Europe, commencing their seasons in August 2025, hosting the tournament at that time becomes impractical.

Sources suggest that CAF is eyeing a window in January-February 2026 as the most viable option for staging AFCON in Morocco.
