Chelsea have a golden chance to make European history tonight when they face Spanish side Real Betis in the UEFA Europa Conference League final in Poland.
The match takes place at the 40,000-capacity Stadion Wroclaw, and a Chelsea win would see them become the first club to win all five major UEFA competitions.
Under new manager Enzo Maresca, the Blues have already won the Champions League, Europa League, Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Super Cup in previous years. The Conference League is the only missing trophy in their collection.
Chelsea arrive in strong form after finishing the Premier League season on a high. A 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest secured their spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Their run in the Conference League has also been impressive. Chelsea have won 11 of their 12 matches, scoring 38 goals and conceding just 9.
Real Betis, on the other hand, are playing in their first-ever European final. Coached by experienced boss Manuel Pellegrini, they finished sixth in La Liga and beat Fiorentina in extra-time to reach this stage.
The Spanish club will be hoping to pull off a shock win and end their season on a high. However, they struggled earlier in the tournament against Polish teams – losing to Legia Warsaw and drawing with Jagiellonia Bialystok – and will need a much better performance against Chelsea.
Team News
Chelsea have been boosted by the return of forward Christopher Nkunku, who is back in training after missing the last six games through injury. Nicolas Jackson is also available, as his domestic ban doesn’t apply in Europe.
However, Marcus Bettinelli, Wesley Fofana, Aaron Anselmino and Romeo Lavia are not eligible to play as they weren’t registered for the tournament. They have travelled with the squad to support the team.
