Chelle Faces Big Decisions as Super Eagles Squad Deadline Nears

With only days left before national teams must submit their final squads for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is under growing pressure as he prepares to announce Nigeria’s 28-man list for the tournament in Morocco.
Chelle’s earlier provisional squad of 54 players sparked debate among fans and analysts, with many calling for a better balance between experienced stars and younger talents. Now, with the final deadline fast approaching, the coach must make tough choices.
Adding to the pressure is FIFA’s sudden decision to shorten pre-tournament preparation to just one week. This means Chelle has little time to experiment or make major changes, forcing him to focus on players who can quickly fit into his plans.
Despite the tight schedule, Chelle is expected to bring in several fresh faces to strengthen the team. One of the standout candidates is Ryan Alebiosu of Blackburn Rovers. The right-back, who came through Arsenal’s academy, has been in top form and could step in for the injured Ola Aina. With Bright Osayi-Samuel struggling for playing time at Birmingham City, Alebiosu’s chances look even stronger.
Another young player pushing for a place is midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro. The 21-year-old, on loan at Pisa from Inter Milan, has enjoyed a breakthrough season and may now earn his first AFCON call-up. If selected, he will compete with Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, and Raphael Onyedika for a spot in the middle of the pitch as Nigeria looks to refresh its midfield options.
In defence, Slavia Prague’s Igoh Ogbu is also in line for inclusion. With captain William Troost-Ekong ruled out and Benjamin Fredrick still recovering from injury, Ogbu’s improved fitness and recent national team appearance could secure him a spot.
Up front, Paul Onuachu is expected to return to the squad. The Trabzonspor striker has been in excellent form, leading the Turkish league’s scoring charts and offering strong support for Victor Osimhen, who has carried much of the team’s attacking responsibility.
As Chelle prepares to make his final selections, the big question remains: will this mix of new talent and returning players be enough to help the Super Eagles challenge for the title in Morocco?
