Daniel Akpeyi: Nigeria Can Learn from South Africa’s Team Spirit

Veteran Nigerian goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has expressed his disappointment with the Super Eagles’ poor performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, saying Nigeria could learn a lot from South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.

Akpeyi, 38, who plays for Marumo Gallants in South Africa, praised the unity and structure in South African football, which he believes has helped them top Group C.

While South Africa lead the group with 13 points from six matches, Nigeria are in fourth place with only seven points after one win and four draws. Benin and Rwanda are ahead of Nigeria, while Lesotho are level on points with the Super Eagles. Zimbabwe sit bottom with four points.

Speaking to FARPost, Akpeyi said:
“The group standings show clearly that South African football is ahead. It’s not just about having big players – building a strong team is what matters, and South Africa have done that well under Hugo Broos. As a Nigerian, I’m really disappointed with our World Cup campaign.”

He added that South Africa’s success is down to team spirit, identity, and a solid domestic league – things Nigeria currently lack.

“Nigeria can do what South Africa are doing if our players come together as a team and stop playing for themselves. In South Africa, there’s no selfishness – it’s all about the team,” Akpeyi explained.

He ended by saying, “Nigeria should be on top of the group, but we’re missing key things like togetherness and a clear identity.”

Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and are now at risk of missing the 2026 edition too.
