Del Potro confident on Davis Cup final fitness

Juan Martin del Potro is confident of being fit enough to feature for Argentina in the Davis Cup final against Croatia in November.

Del Potro overcame Andy Murray in a singles rubber as the South American nation eliminated defending champions Great Britain in their semi-final in Glasgow last weekend.

The 27-year-old is enjoying a resurgence in form as he continues his comeback from a series of wrist injuries, defeating Novak Djokovic en route to the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Rio and then making the quarter-finals of the US Open.

Del Potro, a grand-slam winner who was previously ranked fourth in the world, hopes to be fit enough to help Argentina win the Davis Cup for the first time in their history.

He said: “We managed to fulfil our dream to qualify for the final. We have a united group, we talk a lot. It went perfectly for us and I have enough time to prepare [for the final].

“Playing my third Davis Cup final fills me with emotions and it is best to play it with these great people.

“Now it’s time to rest and to have a general medical examination. I am still not at my best level, even if the last few months were some of the best moments in my career.”
