Del Potro reaches ATP World Tour final since 2014

Juan Martin del Potro reached his first ATP World Tour final since January 2014 thanks to a straight-sets victory over Grigor Dimitrov at the Stockholm Open on Saturday.

The Argentine has not featured in a tournament decider on the Tour since winning the Sydney International almost three years ago, although he did take the silver medal at the Rio Olympic Games earlier this year.

Del Potro’s recent career has been blighted by injury but he has shown signs of recapturing his form this year and is now on the verge of ending his long wait for silverware.

The 28-year-old has seen off two former top-10 players in the form of John Isner and Nicolas Almagro on his route to the final and he disposed of Dimitrov 6-4 7-5.

In both sets, Del Potro made the initial break before delivering the decisive blow after being pegged back by Dimitrov.

Only Jack Sock now stands between Del Potro and the title, with the American having come from behind to see off Alexander Zverev 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.

The match looked to be heading for a deciding tie-break until Sock made a winning break of serve to reach his third final of the year.
