‘Don’t sell Cyriel Dessers’ – Rangers legend Kris Boyd warns club
Former Scotland and Rangers striker, Kris Boyd, has advised the club not to sell Nigerian forward Cyriel Dessers, SportsRation reports.
Dessers, who is 30 years old, faced heavy criticism during his first season at Rangers and was almost sold just six months into his second year. However, he bounced back and finished the 2024/2025 season strongly.
The Super Eagles striker ended the campaign with 29 goals and seven assists in 55 matches across all competitions, winning back support from many Rangers fans.
Despite this, some supporters still doubt his ability to take his chances, especially as the club prepares for changes under new owners and a new manager. Some believe it may be time for Rangers to move on from the Belgian-Nigerian striker. But Kris Boyd disagrees.
“Cyriel Dessers has done well and ended the season as Rangers’ top scorer in European matches. As a striker, you’ll always face criticism, especially when you’re playing up front alone and miss a few chances,” Boyd told the Daily Record.
“But if you look at his numbers, they are excellent. He has scored 50 goals in two seasons for Rangers, and that’s a great achievement.
“People judge him for the chances he missed, but when you look at his overall performance and what he brings to the team, I don’t think he’s a problem at Ibrox.”
Boyd also spoke about the transfer rumours surrounding Dessers.
“He’s been linked with moves before, but nothing has happened. Now it’s happening again, but I always find it strange when strikers get criticised despite scoring so many goals.
“Getting those numbers isn’t easy. You rely on your teammates to create chances. I wouldn’t rush to sell Cyriel Dessers,” the former Nottingham Forest striker added.
While Dessers’ future is still uncertain, Rangers have confirmed that his Nigerian teammate, Leon Balogun, will leave the club at the end of the season.
