England Face France in World Cup Third-Place Play-Off as Tuchel Seeks Strong Finish

England will take on France in the FIFA World Cup third-place play-off on Saturday in Miami, with manager Thomas Tuchel hoping to end the tournament on a positive note.

Although the match is for third place, it carries great importance for England after their painful semi-final defeat to Argentina.

Tuchel has come under heavy criticism following England’s collapse against the South Americans, where they surrendered a 1-0 lead to miss out on a place in the final. Despite the backlash, the German coach has insisted he has no regrets about his tactical decisions and remains fully committed to leading England until the 2028 UEFA European Championship.

Victory over France would see England record their best World Cup finish since winning the tournament in 1966 and could also lift them to third in the FIFA world rankings.

However, England face a difficult challenge against a France side packed with world-class talent, including Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele. France were among the favourites to win the tournament before their semi-final defeat to Spain.

Tuchel is expected to make several changes to his starting line-up, with players who have had limited game time likely to be given a chance. Dean Henderson could replace Jordan Pickford in goal, while Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze are all pushing for starting places.

The England squad will also have to recover quickly after a demanding semi-final, with concerns over both fitness and morale.

A win over France would ease some of the criticism surrounding Tuchel and give England a strong finish to their World Cup campaign. Another defeat, however, is likely to increase pressure on the manager ahead of September’s high-profile clash with Spain at Wembley.

England have twice lost the World Cup third-place play-off, in 1990 and 2018, and will be hoping to avoid a third defeat as they battle France for the bronze medal.
