Even at 51, Jay-Jay Okocha Steals the Show as Legends Play for Peace in Somalia

Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha reminded the world of his magic on Tuesday as he dazzled fans in Mogadishu, Somalia, during a special exhibition match aimed at promoting peace and rebuilding hope in the war-torn nation.

Even at 51, Okocha’s trademark dribbles, flicks, and footwork lit up the stadium, drawing loud cheers from the crowd. Alongside African greats Samuel Eto’o and Emmanuel Adebayor, Okocha was part of a FIFA-supported “peace tour” to help Somalia prepare to host international matches again.

The match, played at Mogadishu’s recently rebuilt national stadium, was the first of its kind in Somalia in 30 years. Once occupied by militants and peacekeepers, the stadium was restored in 2020 and is now a symbol of resilience and renewal.

Okocha’s performance was the highlight of the day. Fans rose to their feet every time he touched the ball, enjoying flashes of the brilliance that once thrilled the world in his playing days.

The legends played for an international team that defeated a local Somali side 8-4. But the scoreline mattered little—what mattered was the joy, the hope, and the message of peace the game brought.

“This match shows that Somalia is recovering from war. It’s more than just football,” said local fan Abdirahman Dhere, beaming with pride.

Security was tight, but the stadium buzzed with excitement. Supporters arrived hours early, many waving Somali flags and singing. “It’s a great day for me — to watch a player like Okocha live, doing the things we’ve only seen on television,” said Mowlid Ali, another overjoyed fan.

Somalia’s Security Minister, Mohamed Ali Haga, said the event was a step forward in changing the world’s perception of Somalia. “We are peaceful, and ready to welcome football again,” he declared.

Football officials from CAF and CECAFA attended the event, and Somalia is hopeful that more matches will follow. But for many, the sight of Jay-Jay Okocha gliding across the pitch once again was proof that football still has the power to inspire, unite, and heal—even decades after a legend hangs up his boots.
