FIFA has announced that it will consider a proposal to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams, SportsRation reports.
The 2030 tournament will mark the 100th anniversary of the World Cup and will be hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, with Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay set to host three matches.
The World Cup was increased from 32 to 48 teams for the 2026 tournament, which will be held in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
A FIFA spokesperson told Reuters, “A proposal to consider a 64-team World Cup to celebrate the centenary in 2030 was brought up by a FIFA Council member during the ‘miscellaneous’ agenda item at the FIFA Council meeting on March 5, 2025.”
“The idea was noted, as FIFA is required to look into any proposals from its Council members.”
It is believed that the suggestion to expand was made by Ignacio Alonso, a representative from Uruguay.
