Flamingos: Nigeria’s Record at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

The Nigeria women’s national under-17 team, popularly known as the Flamingos, have established themselves as one of Africa’s regular representatives at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup since making their debut in 2008.

The team, operated by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is responsible for developing young female footballers for the senior national team, the Super Falcons.

Nigeria have featured in almost every edition of the biennial competition, missing only the 2018 tournament. Their journey has included group-stage exits, quarter-final appearances, a historic third-place finish and, now, a place in the 2026 final.

Nigeria’s Performance at Previous Editions

2008 – Group Stage

The Flamingos made their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup debut in 2008 but could not progress beyond the group stage.

2010 – Quarter-finals

Nigeria reached the knockout stage for the first time, making it to the quarter-finals.

2012 – Quarter-finals

The Flamingos maintained their quarter-final record in the 2012 edition, continuing their steady progress in the competition.

2014 – Quarter-finals

Nigeria reached the last eight for the third consecutive edition but failed to advance to the semi-finals.

2016 – Group Stage

The team suffered another group-stage exit after failing to progress from their group.

2018 – Did Not Qualify

Nigeria missed the 2018 edition, marking the only tournament they have failed to feature in since their debut.

2022 – Third Place

The Flamingos recorded their best performance at the time in India, finishing third.

They defeated the United States in the quarter-finals through a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. Although they lost in the semi-finals, Nigeria defeated Germany in the third-place match to secure the bronze medal.

2024 – Quarter-finals

Nigeria returned to the quarter-finals but could not progress further, ending another campaign among the last eight teams.

2025 – Round of 16

The Flamingos reached the Round of 16 but could not advance to the quarter-finals.

2026 – Finalists

The 2026 edition has produced Nigeria’s greatest achievement in the competition so far.

Under head coach Hakeem Busari, the Flamingos have reached their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final, becoming the first African team to achieve the feat.

Nigeria will face Japan in Saturday’s final, with an opportunity to win the country’s first title at the tournament.

Overall Tournament Record

Before the 2026 final, Nigeria’s participation record reflects their consistent presence at the competition and their gradual progress over the years.
