Flying Eagle star Victor Eletu hails teamwork as reason for win over Italy

Flying Eagles star Victor Eletu has hailed teamwork as reason for Nigeria`s 2-0 win over Italy in a group D clash at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Italy with a bunch of talented individual players were favourites ahead of the game at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza on Wednesday May 24 but were left stunned by a compact Nigeria U-20 team.

AC Milan U-19 midfielder Victor Eletu was named in the starting XI vs the Italians and put in a good shift in midfield as Salem Fago and Jude Sunday scored to seal victory for the U-20 Eagles.

In his post match comments, Eletu picked their ability to play for each other as reason the Gli Azzurrini were stifled.

I am very happy that we won today. I am very happy with how the team played because we showed great character,” Eletu said.

“I know we can go far in this competition because we have a very good team. We played as a team today and that’s why we could beat a strong opponent like Italy.”

A win over Italy has guaranteed Nigeria a spot in the tournaments round of 16 but that will be preceded by a final group stage match vs Brazil who spanked Dominican Republic 6-0 in their second game.

That game will be played on May 27 and will determine the final places in group D. A draw will guarantee top-spot for Nigeria.

Eletu and the Flying Eagles as revealed by the teams Head Coach Ladan Bosso will not be satisfied and so will work to improve until they play in the final game.
