Good news for Nigeria as South African Official admits points are lost after Mokoena rrror in World Cup Qualifier
Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have received a major boost after a South African official admitted the team could lose three points for fielding an ineligible player.
South Africa’s 2-0 win over Lesotho is under scrutiny after midfielder Teboho Mokoena was used despite being suspended. According to FIFA rules, Mokoena should have missed the game after collecting two yellow cards in earlier matches. However, South Africa’s coach Hugo Broos still played him, a mistake now described as a “technical oversight.”
Although Lesotho did not officially protest the issue, likely out of solidarity within the COSAFA region, FIFA is still expected to apply its rules. The error could cost South Africa three points, which would shake up Group C of the qualifiers.
A source from the South African Football Association (SAFA) told Soccer Laduma:
“We have to win every remaining game to ensure qualification. An error was made, and as hard as it is to accept, we cannot go back. The points are gone.”
If FIFA confirms the deduction, it could significantly improve Nigeria’s position in the group. The Super Eagles currently sit fourth with seven points after six games, following a troubled campaign that’s already seen three different head coaches.
José Peseiro began the qualifiers with disappointing draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe. Finidi George followed with a 1-1 draw against South Africa and a painful loss to Benin Republic. The current coach, Eric Chelle, saw a brief improvement with a win over Rwanda but was held at home by Zimbabwe again.
With four matches left, Nigeria must win all remaining games and hope other teams slip. The Super Eagles face South Africa again on 5 September 2025, in what could now be a crucial match in the race for World Cup qualification.
