Injury cuts short Berrettini’s best Slam Run in Years

Matteo Berrettini’s best Grand Slam run in years came to a heartbreaking end after the Italian was forced to retire during his Roland Garros quarterfinal against Matteo Arnaldi.

The former Wimbledon finalist was unable to continue the match with Arnaldi leading 7-5, 5-2, bringing an end to a tournament that had seen some of Berrettini’s best tennis in recent seasons.

After years of battling injuries, the 29-year-old arrived in Paris looking confident and healthy with high hopes of getting to the finals this year.

Instead, his season ends with another injury retirement.

Arnaldi was among the first to praise his fellow Italian after the match.

“He did an amazing tournament. We’re all doing such a good job in Italy. I’m sorry for him and I hope he’s gonna recover because soon comes grass and he’s gonna be very tough to play.”

The retirement ends Berrettini’s strongest Grand Slam run in years and sends Arnaldi into the Roland Garros semifinals for the first time.
