Iran Women Team return sparks mixed Reactions
Iran women’s national football team returned to Tehran to a hero’s welcome after a turbulent AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 campaign, overshadowed by an asylum controversy.
Several players had initially sought asylum in Australia after facing backlash for not singing the national anthem before their opening match. However, most later withdrew their requests and returned home, with only two remaining abroad.
Thousands gathered in Tehran to استقبال the team, with officials praising their loyalty. Football federation president Mehdi Taj declared:
“These athletes are loyal to the homeland, flag, leader and revolution.”
Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani added:
“All Iranians were waiting for you; welcome to Iran.”
Despite the celebrations, the situation has drawn international concern. Activists claim players were pressured to return, alleging their families were threatened during the process. Former player Shiva Amini said:
“They were forced to withdraw their asylum and go back to Iran.”
Iranian officials, however, denied the claims, insisting the players chose to return out of national pride.
