Jorginho’s Late Goal Seals Top Spot for Flamengo Ahead of Chelsea
Flamengo finished top of their FIFA Club World Cup group thanks to a dramatic 1-1 draw against LAFC on Tuesday night at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, with substitute Jorginho playing the hero.
While Denis Bouanga gave LAFC the lead in the 84th minute with their first-ever goal in the tournament, it was Jorginho’s calm finish just two minutes later that secured the point Flamengo needed to leapfrog Chelsea and claim top spot in the group.
LAFC, already eliminated, had threatened a shock result. Earlier, Marlon’s header was ruled out for offside and Mark Delgado hit the post with a curling shot. Flamengo, meanwhile, were denied by the woodwork four times and forced LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris into a spectacular save to keep the scores level before the final minutes.
But it was Jorginho’s goal that proved decisive in the group standings. His quick impact off the bench ensured Flamengo edged Chelsea, who now face a tougher route in the knockout rounds.
Although LAFC exit the competition, they will be proud of their spirited display. But the night ultimately belonged to Flamengo – and Jorginho – as the Brazilian side marched on with confidence.
