Liverpool, Chelsea humbled on shocking Saturday in Premier League

Liverpool and Chelsea were humbled by lower level opposition in their respective Premier League matches on Saturday. The Blues and Reds lost to Brighton and Hove Albion and Leeds United, respectively.

Chelsea boss Graham Potter was humbled on his return to the Amex Stadium as his side lost 4-1 to Brighton, his former side. The English manager had led Chelsea to a nine-match unbeaten run until he lost to the Seagulls away. Leandro Trossard opened the scoring after only five minutes before two own goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah put Chelsea three goals behind by half-time. Kai Havertz pulled one back for Chelsea early in the second half before Pascal Gross scored a late fourth for the home side to give them a memorable win.

Brighton and Hove Albion defeated Chelsea in a Premier League for the first time in the history of the club. The Seagulls enjoyed their first win under new boss Roberto De Zerbi in style.

Later in the day, it was the turn of Liverpool to be on the receiving end of a shock loss, this time at home. The Reds lost 2-1 to a Leeds United side battling relegation, making it two consecutive defeats to such sides after their loss to Nottingham Forest last week.

Anfield was stunned after only four minutes as a careless pass across the box from Joe Gomez was pounced upon by Rodrigo, leaving him with the simple task of firing into an unguarded goal. The home side roared back and were level ten minutes later as Mohamed Salah fired home from close range following a delicious cross from Andy Robertson. Both goalkeepers were called into action several times before Leeds United had the final say. 21-year-old Dutch winger Crysensio Summerville scored a brilliant goal in the 89th minute to give his side all three points from their trip to Anfield.

Leeds United won their first match at Anfield since 2001 and in the process ended Virgil Van Dijk’s incredible four-year unbeaten run at Anfield in the league.
