Mfon Udoh bags brace as Bashandura thrash Brothers 7-1
Nigerian forward Mfon Udoh bagged a brace as Bashandura Kings thrashed Brothers Union 1-7 in a Bangladesh top-flight clash on Saturday, March 30, 2024.
Mfon Udoh was named in the starting lineup for the league leaders and was on for the entire encounter and weighed in with a goal in each half as Bashandura Kings compounded the woes of Brothers Union who were captained by Nigerian footballer Eleta Kingsley.
Both Nigerians got on the scoresheet in the eight-goal thriller, Udoh scoring twice while Eleta Kingsley marked his return to Bangladesh football with Brothers Union’s only goal.
The four-time defending champions asserted their dominance early on, scoring four goals in the first half through Saad Uddin, Robson Robinho, Miguel Figueira, and Mfon Udoh.
However, Kingsley provided a glimmer of hope for Brothers Unions by scoring a consolation goal in stoppage time of the first half, heading in Mahbubur Rahman Sufil’s cross.
Despite Kingsley’s effort, Bashundhara Kings continued their onslaught in the second half, adding three more goals through Figueira and Udoh to complete their braces, along with Mohammad Sohel Rana’s contribution.
The result marked the biggest margin of victory in Bangladesh football this season and also represented Bashundhara Kings’ 85th win in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) since its inception.
With this victory, Bashundhara Kings extended their lead at the top of the table, amassing 25 points from 10 matches, with a comfortable lead over second-placed Mohammedan Sporting Club.
Having previously played for Abahani last season, Kingsley found himself without a club after being released by the Sky Blues. However, Brothers Unions, currently languishing at the bottom of the 10-team table, offered him a lifeline during the mid-season transfer window.
Despite Brothers’ hopes of a fresh start with Kingsley, who was handed the captain’s armband, their encounter with a formidable Bashundhara Kings side turned out to be a one-sided affair at the Rajshahi District Stadium.
Nigerian International, Mfon Udoh and his Bashandura Kings teammates will continue their march towards another league title when they face 3rd placed Abahani Chittagong on April 5 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
