Mikel Questions Troost-Ekong’s Retirement, Slams Nigerian Football Administration

Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has raised concerns over the timing of William Troost-Ekong’s retirement from international football ahead of a major tournament.

Speaking in an interview, Mikel said it was unusual for a team captain and leader to retire just weeks before a major competition like the Africa Cup of Nations. He suggested that there may be unresolved issues behind the decision.

“You cannot have your leader and captain retire two weeks before a major tournament,” Mikel said. “There’s something going on that has not been made public. I know Troost-Ekong very well. He is not the kind of person who quits. He is very passionate and loves his country.”

Mikel added that even if Troost-Ekong was no longer a regular starter, his leadership in the squad would still be important.

“Even if he’s not playing anymore, he’s a leader. He’s not selfish and he’s not the type who insists on being on the pitch. He’s someone who helps the young players,” he said.

Beyond the issue of Troost-Ekong’s retirement, Mikel also criticised the current state of football administration in Nigeria. He insisted that the game cannot move forward without major changes at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

“If Nigerian football must go forward, they have to go,” Mikel said. “It’s crazy that we are killing the talent and potential we have in this country because of greed from people who do not want to do the right thing.”

He added that Nigerian football is being held back by officials who do not understand how to manage players or develop the game properly.
