Minister of Sports denies Involvement in Super Eagles coaching appointment

Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has refuted claims of his involvement in the selection of a new Super Eagles coach.

This clarification comes after Finidi George’s resignation, who stepped down following just two World Cup qualifying games, leaving the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to quickly find a new manager for the three-time African champions.

Reports had suggested that both Senator Enoh and the NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, had traveled to England to search for a new coach for the Super Eagles. However, during an interactive session with sports writers in Abuja, Senator Enoh denied these claims. He confirmed his trip to England but clarified its purpose.

“I was in England to seek sponsors to develop Nigerian sports, not to search for a coach for the Super Eagles,” Enoh stated. “Getting coaches for national teams is entirely the responsibility of the NFF.”

The Minister emphasised the importance of financial support for Nigerian sports. “At this time, Nigeria sports need financial support for us to place sports where it ought to be,” he added. “I urged the NFF to appoint a capable coach who will secure the country’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup and the next African Nations Cup.”
