Nadal still unsure of Rio participation

Rafael Nadal is still unsure if he will be ready to make his return from injury in the Rio Olympic Games.

The 14-time grand slam champion arrived in Brazil on Sunday with doubts still lingering over whether he will be fit enough to represent Spain.

Nadal, a gold medalist in the singles at the Beijing Games eight years ago, has been sidelined since pulling out of the French Open due to a wrist injury.

The 30-year-old is set to be Spain’s flag bearer at the Games, but was unable to offer any assurances over his participation just five days before the opening ceremony.

“I will not be at the best level in any of the categories. I have not competed for two months and I have not trained a lot,” said Nadal.

“I will train a few days here to see what I can do and then decide what is best, to be more positive for me and the team.”

Nadal is due to play in the singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles.
