Ndidi and Chelle React After Super Eagles Edge Tanzania in AFCON Opener

Nigeria captain Wilfred Ndidi and head coach Eric Chelle have shared their reactions after the Super Eagles recorded a hard-fought 2-1 win over Tanzania in their opening Group C match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria took the lead through Semi Ajayi before Tanzania drew level with a goal from Charles M’Mombwa. Ademola Lookman then scored just two minutes later to restore Nigeria’s advantage and seal the victory.

Despite the win, Victor Osimhen showed frustration after being substituted late in the game as Nigeria struggled to see out the match. The striker missed several chances and also had a goal ruled out for offside after a tight decision.

Osimhen was replaced by Paul Onuachu five minutes from time and appeared unhappy as he left the pitch, exchanging words with coach Eric Chelle before sitting on the bench.

After the match, captain Wilfred Ndidi played down the incident and said Osimhen’s reaction was normal.

“He is a big player and he wants to do his best for the team,” Ndidi said. “Maybe he was a bit frustrated. That is normal because we are all human. He tried so hard for the team and felt the game did not go his way. I will speak to him. He wants to win, just like everyone else.”

Head coach Eric Chelle praised Nigeria’s first-half performance but admitted the team must improve.

“In the first half, we did many good things and created a lot of chances,” Chelle said. “In the second half, we made mistakes that allowed Tanzania back into the game. The three points are the most important, but we still have work to do, especially in finishing games.”

Nigeria are now second in Group C behind Tunisia, who beat Uganda on the same day. The Super Eagles will face Tunisia on Saturday, December 27, in a match expected to be a tougher test.
