NFF Initiates contract talks with Super Eagles manager José Peseiro

With the clock ticking on the expiration of his current contract, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has entered negotiations with Super Eagles head coach José Peseiro.

The 63-year-old Portuguese coach, assumed the role in June 2022 following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

Under his stewardship, the Super Eagles achieved a significant feat by clinching the silver medal at the recently concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

According to reports by Own Goal Nigeria, Peseiro has outlined three conditions to the NFF for the renewal of his contract.

First, he seeks a direct two-year deal, contingent upon Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Additionally, Peseiro desires an extension of the contract based on the team’s performance at the tournament, provided they secure qualification.

Another demand from Peseiro is the transfer of salary responsibilities for his first-team assistant coach and goalkeeper trainer from his personal earnings to the football federation.

Currently, he covers these expenses from his monthly salary of $60,000.

In the midst of contract negotiations, speculation surrounds Peseiro’s future.

Reports suggest that he is being considered for the coaching position with the Algeria national team, with his contract with the Super Eagles set to end after the Africa Cup of Nations.

This comes in the wake of Algeria’s disappointing campaign in the same tournament, prompting the Algerian Football Federation to explore managerial alternatives.

Meanwhile, former South Africa and Egypt coach Carlos Queiroz has also emerged as a contender for the Algerian job.

Notwithstanding the uncertainties, former Nigerian goalkeeper Idah Peterside has urged the NFF to part ways with Peseiro, citing concerns over his defensive tactics and suitability for the role.

Despite the mixed opinions, the NFF has initiated talks with Peseiro, indicating a potential continuation of his tenure as Super Eagles coach for the foreseeable future.
