Nigeria Super Falcons defeat Tunisia In WAFCON opener
The Super Falcons of Nigeria launched their campaign for a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2024) title in emphatic fashion, thanks to a clinical display from their attacking stars in a 3-0 win over Tunisia on Sunday at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca.
Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and Chiwendu Ihezuo all found the back of the net as Nigeria opened their Group C journey with a statement victory.
It took just four minutes for Oshoala to make her mark. The experienced striker rose highest to head home a precise cross from Babajide, setting the tone for a dominant first half by the Super Falcons.
Babajide, making her debut in a major tournament for Nigeria, wasn’t content with just an assist. On the stroke of halftime, the C.A. Tenerife winger pounced on a loose ball to double Nigeria’s lead. She celebrated with Diogo Jota’s signature move—a heartfelt tribute to the late Liverpool star, who tragically passed away days earlier.
Chiwendu Ihezuo added the final flourish in the 80th minute. Coming off the bench, the striker latched onto a clever through-ball from fellow substitute Esther Okoronkwo and coolly finished to wrap up the scoring.
While Nigeria had several chances to widen the margin—most notably Ashleigh Plumptre’s long-range effort that was tipped over and a disallowed goal—the goals from Oshoala, Babajide, and Ihezuo were more than enough to secure three points.
With Botswana up next on Wednesday, Nigeria’s goalscorers have laid down a clear marker: the Super Falcons are here to reclaim their crown.
