Nigerian-born basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo falls again with Greece

In their second game of the Paris 2024 Olympics, Greece, led by Nigerian-born star Giannis Antetokounmpo, suffered another defeat as Spain triumphed 84-77.

Despite a strong performance from Antetokounmpo, who recorded 27 points and 11 rebounds, Greece could not overcome Spain’s relentless play.

Antetokounmpo shot 11 of 15 from the field and made three of five free throws, but Spain’s Santi Aldama, who scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, led his team to victory. The game saw a close start, but Spain surged ahead in the second quarter with a 19–5 run sparked by Sergio Llull’s pivotal three-pointer over Antetokounmpo.

Greece made multiple attempts to close the gap, and with just 22 seconds left, Antetokounmpo had a chance to tie the game with a wide-open three-pointer. Unfortunately for Greece, he missed, and Spain sealed their win with free throws.

Greece will now face Australia on August 2, hoping to secure a place in the playoffs as one of the top third-place teams from the group stage.

Antetokounmpo, who carried the Greek flag at the Olympics, had a standout performance in the opening game against Canada, scoring 34 points, but Greece lost 86-79. Despite these setbacks, Antetokounmpo remains a source of national pride and continues to represent Greece with passion.
