Nigerian-born striker Samuel Omorodion scores as Spain lose to Egypt in Paris Olympic game clash

Nigerian-born striker Samuel Omorodion scored for Spain’s U23 side in their final group game of the 2024 Paris Olympics, but his late goal was not enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat against Egypt.

The result saw Egypt top the group and advance to the quarterfinals of the Olympic games men’s football event.

Omorodion, who has opted to represent Spain at the international level, found the net in the 90th minute, offering a glimmer of hope for his team. However, Spain’s efforts to overcome a 2-0 deficit fell short.

Egypt took an early lead when Ahmed ‘Zizo’ Sayed provided a precise assist to Ibrahim Adel, who scored in the 40th minute. Spain struggled to break down Egypt’s defense before halftime. In the second half, Egypt extended their lead with another goal from Adel, who capitalized on a defensive error in the 62nd minute.

Spain increased their attacking intensity in response, and Omorodion’s header in the 90th minute reduced the deficit to 2-1. The referee added 10 minutes of injury time, but despite their efforts, Spain could not find an equalizer. Egypt’s Ahmed Atef had a chance to seal the victory, but his shot was saved by the Spanish goalkeeper.

Egypt’s win secured them top spot in Group C with seven points. They will face the runners-up from Group D in the quarterfinals on August 2nd.
