Novak Djokovic: “We’re Setting the Bar Higher

Novak Djokovic believes some of the world’s greatest athletes are continuing to raise the standard, even as they get older.

Speaking at Wimbledon, the 24-time Grand Slam champion praised stars like Lionel Messi, LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Rory McIlroy, saying they continue to perform at the highest level despite the demands of elite sport.

“I love watching greatness in the making. And the evolution of greatness, like Messi and LeBron James. These guys that are still playing, Curry, Rory, as you mentioned. It’s amazing to see.”

Djokovic believes their continued success is changing expectations across professional sport.

“I feel like we’re all setting the bar higher and moving the needle of what people thought was possible in terms of level of competition and level of performance at a late age.”

While discussing the athletes he admires most, Djokovic said he enjoys watching history unfold, regardless of the sport.

“I’m always a big fan of witnessing history.”

The Serbian revealed that he closely follows football, basketball, Formula 1 and golf, explaining that competing at the highest level has given him an even greater appreciation for athletes who continue to succeed year after year.

“I know what it takes to be great in your sport. Huge respect for them.”

Djokovic also smiled as he pointed out that he and Lionel Messi were both born in 1987.

“Messi was born the same year as I was born, ’87… It’s a good year to be born.”

As he continues his Wimbledon campaign, Djokovic believes athletes across different sports are proving that excellence doesn’t have to fade with age. Instead, they are continuing to raise the standard for the next generation.
