Red Devils goalkeeper fumbles as Galatasaray hold club
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was hugely implicated in his side’s 3-3 draw against Galatasaray at the RAMS Park in Istanbul, leaving his side on the brink of a group stage exit from the UEFA Champions League.
Following their dramatic defeat to FC Copenhagen in their last match in the tournament, Erik ten Hag’s side needed a win in Istanbul to keep their hopes of staying in the competition alive.
Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho continued his fine run of form with a strike in the 11th minute to open the scoring after he latched onto an assist by captain Bruno Fernandes.
The Portuguese midfielder turned scorer from provider with a brilliant strike from outside the box in the 18th minute, stunning the Turkish fans into a momentary silence.
Galatasaray pulled one back in the 29th minute when former Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech struck a free-kick which former teammate Onana should have gotten to, but failed to.
The Turkish side delivered a mighty scare before half-time as Mauro Icardi scored to level matters, but the Argentine striker was marginally offside and the goal was ruled out.
Manchester United restored their two-goal cushion ten minutes into the second half when prolific midfielder Scott McTominay slid home a precise finish from inside the box following a cross from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Galatasaray were not going to lose in front of their fans and mustered a fight-back instantly. Seven minutes later, Ziyech scored his second of the night with another free-kick. The Moroccan forward fired an effort at goal which squirmed under the grasp of Onana to give his side hope.
In the 71st minute, the home side levelled matters for the first time in the match through Kerem Akturkoglu, who fired a fierce drive into the back of the net.
Galatasaray now sit second in Group A after their thrilling draw with Manchester United, while the Red Devils are bottom of the standings with five matches played. They need to win against Bayern Munich and hope that results elsewhere go their way to reach the Last 16 of the competition.
