Pacers Return Home for Crucial Game 3 – Patience and Defence Needed

Indiana Pacers got the split they needed away in Oklahoma City, but now as they return home, the big question is: will that be enough? Game 2 was a strong reminder of how dominant the Thunder can be, and it may have shaken the confidence of Pacers fans.

Game 3 will be key in this NBA Finals series. Here are four things to look out for:

1. Pacers Must Avoid Another Slow Start

One of the most revealing stats so far: the Thunder have led for more than 91 minutes, while the Pacers have only led for under 2 minutes across the two games. Indiana have done well to come from behind throughout the playoffs, but against a team like Oklahoma City, it’s dangerous to keep falling behind early.

In Game 1, a 15–5 Thunder run in the first quarter put the Pacers behind, but they kept the gap close enough to allow Haliburton’s late game-winner.

Game 2 was different. The Thunder went on a 19–2 run in the second quarter and took a 23-point lead. This time, the Pacers couldn’t come back.

Indiana knows things have to change – and it starts with Tyrese Haliburton. He needs to be more aggressive from the start and look for his own shots.

“Playing these two games helps. I’ll study the film and try to be better in Game 3,” Haliburton said. “I know I haven’t been great. I’m just working to be the best version of myself.”

2. Thunder’s Defence Causing Problems

Haliburton has dealt with pressure before, like in the Knicks series. But the Thunder have more defenders to throw at him – big, small, and quick ones. Coach Rick Carlisle said, “They can put different types of players on both Tyrese and Pascal. That’s a big strength for them.”

If the Pacers want to win, they need to break down this defence early, not play catch-up again.

3. Pacers’ Defence Must Improve

While much has been said about the offence, Indiana’s biggest problem in Game 2 was defence. Oklahoma City scored at a much higher rate than usual – with a 126 offensive rating, far above their regular average.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way, not just with points, but smart play. He drew defenders and created space for teammates like Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams to shine. Meanwhile, Caruso and Wiggins scored 38 of the Thunder’s 46 bench points.

If the Pacers don’t tighten up their defence, it won’t matter what other changes they make.

4. Carlisle May Need to Use a Smaller Rotation

In two games, the Pacers are +7 when Haliburton is on the floor and -22 when he is not. Similar numbers follow for other key players – Turner and Nesmith have also made positive impacts.

Indiana has used its squad depth well this season, but now it may be time for Carlisle to focus more on his top players. That means playing Haliburton over 40 minutes and sticking with the core group that’s working.

Bonus: Watch Haliburton’s Fitness

After Game 2, Haliburton was seen limping slightly. But in training before Game 3, he looked fine and said there’s no cause for concern.

“I’m fine. Just a lower leg thing,” he said. “I’ll be ready for Game 3.”

Still, fans and coaches will be keeping an eye on him.

Conclusion:
Indiana must start strong, defend better, and trust their top players. If they can do that – and Haliburton steps up – they have every chance of taking the lead in the series.
