Paul Pogba Insists he is “not a cheater” but takes responsibility for doping ban, credits Wife Zulay for support
Paul Pogba has spoken out about his doping ban, firmly declaring his innocence while taking responsibility for the oversight that led to his suspension. The Juventus and France star also revealed how his wife, Zulay, motivated him during this difficult period.
Pogba tested positive for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a substance known to enhance testosterone levels, following a drug test after Juventus’ opening match of the 2023-24 season. Initially handed a four-year ban, the midfielder successfully appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), resulting in a reduced suspension of 18 months.
This reduction ensures Pogba can return to competitive football in March 2025, saving his career from what could have been an early retirement at the age of 35.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Pogba denied deliberately using performance-enhancing drugs, insisting:
“I like to win fairly. I’m a bad loser, but I’m not a cheater.”
He admitted, however, that he should have been more cautious:
“I’ve never taken performance-enhancing drugs, but I should have triple-checked everything. I take full responsibility for what happened.”
The midfielder also reflected on the emotional toll of the situation, admitting:
“When they gave me the four-year ban, I thought my career might be over.”
Pogba credited his wife, Zulay, for giving him strength during this challenging period. He described her as a vital source of motivation when he doubted whether he would ever play again.
With his suspension reduced, Pogba can resume training in early 2025 and make his comeback in March. Juventus, meanwhile, will take on Lazio on 19 October 2024 as they continue their Serie A campaign.
