Porto Overpower Napoli 4-1 to Claim First Champions League Win of the Season
Porto finally have their first Champions League victory of the season after delivering an impressive 4-1 win over Napoli at the Estádio do Dragão.
It was a deserved result for the Portuguese side, who showed greater urgency and attacking intent, particularly after the break, to overcome the Italian champions.
Porto took the lead in the 11th minute through Jan Bednarek, who found the net from a Gabri Veiga corner. Napoli struggled to deal with the hosts’ set-piece threat but managed to get back into the contest before half-time.
Scott McTominay restored parity in the 43rd minute, giving Napoli hope of taking something from the game. However, Porto came out with renewed determination in the second half and eventually found the breakthrough again.
Gabri Veiga put the hosts back in front in the 71st minute, finishing off a move that gave Porto the advantage they had been pushing for.
Napoli’s problems continued when Jakub Kiwior made it 3-1 in the 80th minute. The defender’s goal left the visitors with little time to respond, and their evening took another difficult turn when Rafa Marin was sent off in the 89th minute.
Porto made the most of their numerical advantage, with Samu Aghehowa converting a penalty in the 90th minute to complete the 4-1 victory.
For Porto, it was an important response and a welcome boost to their Champions League campaign. Beating a side of Napoli’s quality will also give them plenty of confidence heading into their next European fixture.
Napoli, meanwhile, will be disappointed with how the game unfolded. After fighting their way back into the contest, they were unable to cope with Porto’s second-half pressure and ultimately left Portugal with a heavy defeat.
