Qatar 2022: Attention shifts to Cameroon and Ghana as Africa search for first goal and win

The 2022 FIFA World Cup has been full of surprises, upset, and record-breaking moments and African nations have also had a fair share.

Earlier today, Morocco were forced to a goalless draw by Croatia who have had it easy against African opponents in the past World Cups.

The 2018 runners-up, defeated Cameroon 4-0 in the 2014 World Cup, and also beat Nigeria 2-0 in the 2018 World Cup.

But they failed to find their third win in the consecutive world cup against an African opposition as they could only get a draw against Morocco.

– Croatia failed to score for the first time in 12 World Cup matches, since what was their only other goalless draw in the competition against Japan in 2006.

In other games played today, Japan, Spain, and Gavi entered the history books

– Germany have lost a World Cup game in which they led at halftime for the first time since 1978 (2-3 vs Austria), having gone unbeaten in their previous 21 such matches before today.
– Japan came from behind to win a World Cup match for the very first time, having drawn two and lost 11 of their 13 matches when they had trailed before today
– Spain became the sixth nation to reach 100 goals in the competition’s history after Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, and Italy.
-Gavi became the youngest scorer in a World Cup match since Pele (17y, 249d) in the 1958 final

So far in the first round of games at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, three African nations have played and only one ended on the losing side.

Attention will now shift to Cameroon and Ghana as Africa continues the search for the first win and first goal at Qatar 2022.

Ghana have a tough game against star-studded Portugal led by the great Cristiano Ronaldo, and Cameroon also play against Switzerland.

If there is anything we have learned so far at Qatar 2022, it is that any team can be beaten after Saudi Arabia’s shock win against Argentina and Japan’s victory against Germany.
