Roberto De Zerbi chooses Marseille over Manchester United

While the final details of Roberto De Zerbi’s prospective move to Olympique de Marseille are being finalized, reports from Foot Mercato reveal that the Italian manager opted for the job at the Vélodrome over a position at Manchester United.

Despite widespread reports in the UK confirming Erik Ten Hag’s continuity at United, it is well-known that the club explored potential managerial replacements. Managers like Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi were approached, with De Zerbi being available after his departure from Brighton and Hove Albion at the end of the 2023/24 season.

De Zerbi reportedly turned down Manchester United’s approach in favor of joining Marseille. The deal to bring him to OM is nearing completion, with discussions between the relevant parties at an advanced stage. According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, the only remaining issue to be resolved is the compensation fee, expected to be around €6 million.

To facilitate his move to the Vélodrome, De Zerbi has reportedly made financial sacrifices, taking a pay cut to join the Ligue 1 giants. The former Brighton manager has agreed to a three-year deal with Marseille, pending confirmation by the club after they agree on a compensation package with Brighton.

Despite the difficulty of getting a deal over the line, De Zerbi appears determined to seal a move to Marseille. His reported rejection of Premier League giants Manchester United to finalize the deal underscores his commitment to Les Minots. This decision highlights De Zerbi’s preference for the project at Marseille and his belief in the potential of the club to achieve significant success.
