Samson Siasia: South Africa will be difficult for Super Eagles

Nigerian football legend Samson Siasia has evaluated the Super Eagles’ preparedness for their upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

Siasia, who has coached the senior national team, believes the Super Eagles may face challenges in the match for two key reasons.

Despite currently serving a FIFA suspension over match-fixing allegations, which is set to expire soon, Siasia has remained active in the media. He recently shared his insights on the Super Eagles’ situation as they aim to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, having missed the 2022 edition.

Challenges Highlighted by Siasia: Siasia pointed out the absence of star striker Victor Osimhen as a major disadvantage for Nigeria. Osimhen, who sustained an injury ruling him out for up to a month, has been replaced in the squad by Enugu Rangers’ left-back Kenneth Igboke. Siasia emphasized that Osimhen’s absence would significantly impact the team.

Additionally, Siasia suggested that South Africa might have an edge in team synergy. Hugo Broos, the South African coach, has been in charge since 2021, allowing him to build a cohesive team. In contrast, Finidi George is yet to coach his first game as the permanent head coach of the Super Eagles, although he has served as interim coach for two matches.

“It will be difficult for the Super Eagles as they will be without a key player (Osimhen), and while South Africa will be coming with the same coach and players, we have a new coach,” Siasia said, according to ScoreNigeria.

Super Eagles’ Spirit Despite these challenges, midfielder Wilfred Ndidi expressed confidence in the team’s collective strength. When asked about Osimhen’s absence, Ndidi acknowledged the striker’s exceptional qualities but emphasised that the team’s unity would be their strength.

The Super Eagles face the Bafana Bafana on June 7th, aiming to boost their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
