Sharapova to play tournament with McEnroe, Navratilova and Roddick

Banned tennis star Maria Sharapova will participate in the World Team Tennis Smash Hits exhibition event alongside the likes of John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova and Andy Roddick next week.

Sharapova tested positive for banned substance meldonium at this year’ Australian Open and was initially suspended for two years, ruling her out of competitive action until January 2018.

However, the former world number one, who claimed to be unaware meldonium had been added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list, had her ban reduced to 15 months on Tuesday following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Sharapova will be eligible for competitive action in April 2017, but she will be back on court for the charity event in Las Vegas on Monday.

Five-time grand slam winner Sharapova forms part of a line-up that includes the likes of McEnroe, Navratilova and Roddick.

Mardy Fish, Mark Philippoussis and Liezel Huber will also take part in the event that is co-hosted by Billie Jean King.

A social media post from the official World Team Tennis account read: “We’re thrilled to welcome @MariaSharapova to #WTTSmashHits for [the] 1st time at @Caesars Palace on 10/10!”
