Shooting Stars Vs Rangers: NPFL Referee punished for missed penalty decision
The NPFL board has suspended the referee who officiated the crucial match between Shooting Stars and Rangers International on matchday 36.
This match, held on Wednesday night in Ibadan, ended with Rangers International losing their unbeaten streak under controversial circumstances.
In the game, Shooting Stars’ Christian Pyagbara scored the winning goal in the first half. However, the match was overshadowed by a contentious decision to deny Rangers a clear penalty in the second half.
The NFF Referees’ Committee criticized the referee, Dr. Bashir Saidu, for failing to recognize and properly assess the challenges for the ball, leading to the missed penalty call.
“Your action adversely affects the outcome of the match and thus, I am directed to notify you that you have been stepped down indefinitely and with immediate effect from the NPFL matches,” stated the committee.
This decision has significantly impacted the NPFL title race, with league leaders Rangers International dropping crucial points.
Meanwhile, Shooting Stars extended their impressive home unbeaten run in front of a 10,000-strong crowd in Ibadan.
The NPFL’s quick response to suspend the referee emphasises the league’s commitment to fair play and maintaining the competition’s integrity.
