Sports Minister clears up controversy over Team Nigeria kits at Paris 2024 Olympics

Sports Minister John Enoh has addressed the recent controversy regarding Team Nigeria’s kits at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics, clarifying the situation in a statement.

On Thursday, August 1, 2024, Enoh emphasised, “It is important to restate the facts provided by the Federal Ministry of Sports Development about the preparation of athletes for the Paris 2024 Olympics.”

The minister explained that some reports had suggested a crisis concerning the “two kits” issue for the Nigerian team. Enoh stated, “There is no crisis regarding Team Nigeria’s kits. The athletes are fully equipped, and no detail has been overlooked by the Sports Ministry.”

He outlined that before the Olympics, he had a meeting with the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) to review the preparations. During this meeting, NOC President Engr. Habu Gumel mentioned a donation of 200 kits from a brand called Actively Black. Enoh clarified, “No contract was mentioned that required these kits to be used for both the opening and closing ceremonies. The interaction with Actively Black was solely between them and the NOC. The Ministry of Sports was not informed of any conditions attached to the donation.”

Enoh noted that the 200 kits were insufficient for the over 100 athletes and their support staff. Consequently, he instructed the Ministry to provide additional kits in partnership with PEAK, including tracksuits, windcheaters, shorts, T-shirts, canvas shoes, slides, face caps, trolley bags, cabin bags, backpacks, water bottles, and towels.

The kits were officially unveiled to the public on July 8, 2024, and presented to Team Nigeria. Enoh added, “The Ministry ensured that culturally reflective attire was provided for the Opening Ceremony, maintaining our tradition of showcasing Nigeria’s heritage.”

He further clarified, “Besides the partnership with PEAK, the Federal Ministry of Sports Development did not have agreements with any other brand for Team Nigeria’s kitting for the Opening Ceremony or the games.”

Enoh concluded, “All activities related to the Paris 2024 Olympics have been conducted transparently and with respect. Athletes have received their allowances in full, and our focus is on maintaining positive momentum and prioritizing athletes’ welfare.”
