Sports Minister declares 2024 Davis Cup Africa Group III qualifiers open in Abuja
Senator John Owan Enoh, Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, has officially inaugurated the 2024 Davis Cup Africa Group III qualifiers in Abuja.
In his speech, the minister hailed the importance of tennis in Nigeria, calling it one of the nation’s strongest sports with a fervent following.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s history of producing top tennis players, Senator Enoh highlighted the significant opportunity for the team to earn promotion to Euro Africa Group II. “I urge the athletes to seize this opportunity with both hands. I am rooting for Nigerian athletes to secure promotion to the next stage. The country is behind them, and we are hosting to win,” he declared.
The minister also extended a warm welcome to the six participating countries, assuring them of a successful and hospitable tournament.
Dayo Akindoju, President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, welcomed all participants, emphasising Nigeria’s hospitality and the country’s readiness to host the event. He commended the minister for attending the opening ceremony, highlighting its importance for the sport.
Former President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, Sani Ndanusa, also attended the ceremony. He encouraged the athletes to strive for the promotion spot and praised their performances thus far. “I am highly impressed with what I have seen so far. I believe Nigeria can come out on top, but the players must work hard and not take anything for granted,” he concluded.
