Steve Clarke Resigns as Scotland Head Coach After World Cup Exit

Steve Clarke has resigned as Scotland head coach following the country’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Scottish Football Association announced Clarke’s departure shortly after Croatia’s victory over Ghana on Saturday confirmed Scotland’s elimination from the tournament.

According to reports, Scotland’s players were informed of Clarke’s decision while the squad remained at their base in Charlotte. The resignation comes just one month after the 62-year-old signed a new four-year contract.

Scotland began their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Haiti in Boston but suffered back-to-back defeats against Morocco and Brazil, losing both matches 1-0 and 3-0 respectively.

The Scots had hoped to progress to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams, but those hopes ended after results elsewhere went against them.

In an emotional farewell message, Clarke thanked his players and reflected on his seven years in charge.

“The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn’t have had any of the memories we’ve made since 2019,” he said.

“They deserve all the praise they receive and it was truly an honour to be their manager. Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor.”

Clarke took over as Scotland manager in 2019, ending the country’s long wait to return to major tournaments after they had failed to qualify since the 1998 World Cup.

Under his leadership, Scotland qualified for two European Championships and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the team struggled to make a major impact at those tournaments, with their recent victory over Haiti their only win across all three competitions.

Scottish FA chief executive Ian Maxwell praised Clarke’s contribution to Scottish football.

“While we are all disappointed to have exited the World Cup at the group stage, we must not lose sight of the significant progress made during Steve’s seven years in charge,” Maxwell said.

“From being a pot four team in 2019 to winning our World Cup qualifying group, Steve achieved his goal of taking Scotland back to major tournaments.

“We thank him for his outstanding contribution and believe Scotland supporters will always cherish the memories created under his leadership.”

Clarke leaves his role as one of the most successful Scotland managers of the modern era, having guided the national team back onto the international stage after more than two decades away.
