Sunday Oliseh Appointed to International Football’s Rule-Making Body, IFAB
Former Super Eagles captain and coach, Sunday Oliseh, has been appointed to the International Football Association Board (IFAB) — the body responsible for setting and updating the rules of football worldwide.
Oliseh shared the news on his official X (formerly Twitter) page, expressing his joy and honour at joining the historic board.
“Thrilled to announce my appointment to the International Football Association Board (IFAB)! IFAB is the global guardian of football’s laws, responsible for determining the laws of football, shaping the beautiful game for players and fans worldwide. Honoured to contribute to its mission!” Oliseh wrote.
This appointment marks a significant achievement for the former Nigeria international, who also had a successful playing career in Europe with clubs like Ajax and Borussia Dortmund. Oliseh’s new role puts him in a position to influence key decisions that affect the future of football globally.
What is IFAB?
-
IFAB Sets Football’s Laws
IFAB is the only official body with the authority to write, review, and interpret the Laws of the Game — including rules on offside, VAR, handball, and more. -
Older Than FIFA
Founded in 1886 by the football associations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, IFAB existed before FIFA, which only joined in 1913. -
Small But Powerful
IFAB has just five voting members: FIFA (with four votes) and one vote each for the football associations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. At least six of the eight total votes are required to approve any rule change, meaning FIFA needs support from at least two of the British associations. -
Innovation Hub
From goal-line technology to trials like VAR and time-keeping systems, IFAB is responsible for testing and approving all major rule innovations before they’re officially adopted. -
Annual General Meeting
IFAB holds a yearly meeting to discuss possible rule changes. It is one of the most important gatherings in global football.
Oliseh’s inclusion in this elite body is a proud moment for Nigerian and African football. It places him among a select group helping to shape how the game is played around the world.
