Super Eagles met with hostility in Porto Novo

Made to train in darkness

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been received coldly by the Beninoise after they made their way into the country for a crunch AFCON 2021 qualifier on Friday, with the Nigerian contingent already facing a number of issues from their hosts.

First, the Super Eagles players had to complete their evening training session in the dark after the floodlights of the Stade Charles de Gaulle were not put on due to a power outage. The players, led by captain Ahmed Musa were caught on camera leaving the pitch with their phones’ flashlights as their source of illumination. Also, the Benin Republic football association has given only 20 of the 300 slots mandated by CAF for the game to Nigerian spectators, and only 5 journalists were accredited ahead of tomorrow’s game.

This seems like a ploy to make the Super Eagles uncomfortable ahead of the game, and it also shows how long a way African football has to go.
