Super Eagles star Raphael Onyedika slammed for ‘angry’ reaction to substitution
Club Brugge legend Marc Degryse has criticised Raphael Onyedika for his angry outburst after being substituted in the 82nd minute of Brugge’s 2-1 win over KVC Westerlo on Saturday in a Jupiler Pro League match.
Onyedika, 23, returned to the starting lineup after missing the previous 1-1 draw with Union Saint-Gilloise due to a red card suspension from an earlier game against Charleroi.
The Nigerian midfielder made an immediate impact, assisting Jorne Spileers’ opener in the 4th minute, marking his first assist of the season. Club Brugge extended their lead through Hans Vanaken, but Onyedika’s error allowed Westerlo back into the game.
He delivered a poor back pass to goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who was unable to clear the ball and fouled Matija Frigan in the box. Allahyar Sayyadmanesh converted the penalty, giving the home side hope before halftime.
Onyedika was taken off in the 82nd minute, replaced by Hugo Vetlesen, but he reacted angrily to the substitution. Degryse, speaking with Het Laatste Nieuws via Voetbalbelgie, criticised the midfielder’s behaviour.
“I think the coach or the club’s board needs to tell Onyedika that this kind of performance at Westerlo is unacceptable,” Degryse said. “And for him to be angry when substituted—especially as a defensive midfielder—is disappointing. I’ve never seen that from a player in the ‘6’ role.”
Onyedika has started every league game he was available for this season, except one. With nine appearances so far, the Super Eagles midfielder remains an important part of Nicky Hayen’s plans, but his behaviour has now raised concerns within the club.
