Super Eagles Star Salim Fago Lawal Close to Big Move from NK Istra
Nigeria international Salim Fago Lawal is close to leaving Croatian club NK Istra 1961, with talks over a transfer said to be at an advanced stage.
Reports from Croatia say negotiations are progressing well and a deal could be completed in the coming days. The transfer fee for the Super Eagles youngster is expected to rise above €2 million, a notable amount for a player who joined the club just 18 months ago.
Although the buying club has not been officially confirmed, Azerbaijani champions Qarabağ FK have been linked with the 23-year-old forward. Qarabağ are regular participants in European competitions and are known for their strong finances and ambition.
Lawal has been one of the standout players in the Croatian league this season. He has scored five league goals and provided two assists in 17 appearances for Istra. He also scored twice in two matches in the Croatian Cup.
His pace, direct style, and improved finishing have made him one of the most exciting young attackers in the league and a valuable asset for Istra.
Lawal’s rise has been rapid. He was a surprise inclusion in Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and made his senior debut in a friendly match against Egypt. He later featured in the group-stage win over Uganda and went on to win a bronze medal with the Super Eagles.
Since returning to club football, Lawal has continued his fine form, scoring shortly after his AFCON return.
The forward joined NK Istra in August 2023 from Nigerian academy side Mavlon FC, and his expected transfer now appears to be the next major step in his growing career.
