Team Akwa Ibom Set for Busy Wednesday Schedule at National Sports Festival

After an outstanding performance on Tuesday that saw Akwa Ibom climb to ten medals on the overall tally, Team Akwa Ibom will be back in action across multiple venues on Wednesday at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

The State’s athletes shone brightly on Tuesday, May 20, clinching medals in various sports, including a standout showing in Weightlifting Kungfu and AYO. With momentum firmly on their side, Team Akwa Ibom is set for a packed schedule as they look to extend their medal haul.

According to the Team Akwa Ibom media unit, Tennis players will take to the courts at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, while the Golf team competes at the serene Abeokuta Golf Club. Weightlifting, which has already delivered four medals for the State, continues at the NYSC Camp in Shagamu, with high expectations for more podium finishes.

At the Ogun Sports Club, the Dart event will see Team Akwa Ibom athletes aiming for more accuracy and victory. Simultaneously, the Alake Sports Center in Abeokuta will host both the Badminton and Squash events, where Akwa Ibom athletes continue their quest for medals.

The Civic Center in Ikenne will be a focal point again as the State’s Kungfu competitors return to action following their already impressive return of four medals at the ongoing Festival. With that success, expectations are high for more medals in this combat Sport.

Meanwhile, at the Remo Stadium, Team Akwa Ibom will aim to build on their gold and silver medal wins in the Ayo event, as they also compete in Chess.

In Ilisan, action will be split between Taekwondo at the Ilisan Hall and Judo training sessions at the town hall as athletes finalize preparations for their upcoming bouts. Kickboxing matches will also be on the agenda, with Team Akwa Ibom fighters ready to throw their weight around in search of victory.

Boxing matches take center stage at the Baptist High School in Abeokuta. Cycling athletes will also represent the State on the streets of Abeokuta, to complete the Team’s competitive mix.

With each event, Akwa Ibom athletes carry not just the hopes of their state, but the guiding words of the State Governor: “Compete clean with pride.”
