Thierry Henry: Arsenal Should Have Won a Trophy Under Arteta by Now
Former Arsenal captain Thierry Henry says the club has underachieved over the past three years under manager Mikel Arteta.
Arteta, 43, has helped turn Arsenal into regular title challengers since joining from Manchester City in 2019. But the Gunners have not won any trophies since lifting the FA Cup in 2020 during his first season in charge.
Arsenal have finished second in the Premier League for the past three seasons and were knocked out in the semi-finals of both the Champions League and Carabao Cup this year.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Henry said:
“I’m not saying I’m disappointed with Arsenal, but it’s normal for people to ask questions about the team now.”
He added:
“When a manager first comes in, it’s not his team yet. You need at least three or four transfer windows to bring in the players you want. That takes time.
“But in the last three years, Arsenal have been in a strong position and should have at least won a cup or reached a final.”
Despite averaging 82 points per season in the last three league campaigns, Henry compared Arsenal’s progress to that of Manchester United.
“People laugh at United, but they’ve played in five finals and won two trophies in the past five years,” Henry said.
“In the last three years of Arsenal building something, they haven’t reached a single final. So I understand why people are asking, ‘Shouldn’t you have won something by now?’”
