Thomas Müller Says Emotional Goodbye After Final Bayern Munich Match

German football legend Thomas Müller has played his last match for Bayern Munich, the only club he has ever played for in his career.

Müller’s time at the club ended after Bayern’s 2–0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday. Goals from Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé knocked Bayern out of the competition.

What Müller Said

Speaking after the match, Müller didn’t go into much detail about his emotions or future plans but admitted the moment was special.

“I’m still fully focused on the game,” he said. “It didn’t feel too different before the match. We just wanted to go one step further, and I tried my best too.”

Müller felt Bayern were unlucky to lose: “In the end, maybe we deserved more. But football can go either way in tight games like this. This time, it didn’t go our way.”

He also spoke briefly about the end of his Bayern journey:
“Of course, I know this was my last game. I’ll need some time to process it all. Right now, I don’t feel ready to speak deeply about my career. We’ve just lost an important match.”

Earlier this year, Müller confirmed he would leave Bayern after the 2024–25 season. Despite the Club World Cup loss, Bayern still won the Bundesliga title this season — their 34th — giving Müller one last domestic trophy.

The 34-year-old leaves as Bayern’s all-time record appearance maker, with over 750 matches played, and also holds the club’s record for most assists.

Though there were rumours of a possible move to Manchester United, Müller had already ruled it out, saying, “I am not the right guy for that.”
