US-Based Boxing Champion Visits Akwa Ibom, Presents Title Belt to Sports Commissioner
Nigerian-born, U.S.-based boxing champion Enobong “The Nigerian Gentleman” Umohette recently visited Akwa Ibom State, where he proudly presented his IBA Continental Heavyweight Championship belt to the State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey.
The Onna-born boxer, who is undefeated in his last five fights after returning from nearly eight years of retirement, said the visit was emotional and meaningful. He expressed how proud he is to represent Akwa Ibom and Nigeria on the global stage, and stated his desire to work with the state government to develop sports, especially for young people.
As first reported by Journalist, Bassey Ibiatisuho, during the visit, Umohette praised Governor Umo Eno for choosing Elder Paul Bassey as Sports Commissioner, calling the appointment well-deserved due to Bassey’s long-standing experience and success in the sports world.
The champion boxer also thanked several prominent figures for their support throughout his career, including Governor Umo Eno, former Governor Victor Attah, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former Governor Udom Emmanuel, and Ambassador Udo Moses Williams.
In response, Sports Commissioner Elder Paul Bassey congratulated Umohette for bringing honor to Akwa Ibom and Nigeria. He described him as a role model and a symbol of hope for young athletes in the state. Bassey assured the boxer that the state is focused on sports development through Governor Eno’s ARISE Agenda and welcomes partnerships with successful professionals like Umohette.
With 13 career wins, Umohette is now ranked among the top 100 heavyweight boxers in the world and is just one fight away from a chance to compete for major world titles under WBA, WBC, and IBF.
